Sunbasket Review - The most Delicious Meal Kits Out There?
Sunbasket offers one of the most extensive ranges of specialist diets in the meal kit industry. Covering paleo, vegetarian and pescetarian among its many options, it has slowly risen to become one of the most popular health-based and organic delivery services out there.
Meal delivery kits don’t come much Fresher than those on offer at Sun Basket, and the provider is hoping to corner the organic and specialist diet market. It has spent years building direct relationships with independent farmers right across the US, and each meal generates 33% fewer carbon emissions than a grocery store equivalent.
Sun Basket is both known for its sustainable and environmentally conscious ethos, and healthy, delicious meals that are incredibly simple to prepare. What’s more, the provider donates around 1,000 lbs of food each week to food banks, meaning customers are helping to contribute to charitable works.

Health-conscious people – You’ll find lean meats, a ton of veg and almost 100% organic ingredients here. The meal kits aren’t necessarily there to help you lose weight, but they’re a great way to get some high-quality nutrition into your diet
Time savers – Most meals can be prepared quite quickly, with an average cooking time of around 20 minutes, which is great for people on the go. You can hold on to the handy cooking cards too and replicate your favorite meals in the future
People that love extras – Unlike most meal kit services, Sunbasket has a huge range of extras and add-ons. You can find a wide variety of grocery items, desserts, organic cheeses, smoothies and overnight oats pots to supplement your main plan
Specialist dieters – If you’re trying out a new diet, Sunbasket has you covered. You’ll find paleo, vegetarian, pescetarian, lean and clean, diabetes-friendly and carb-conscious plans to name a few
Those on the hunt for something a bit different – We’re always impressed by the sheer inventiveness of the weekly recipes on offer here. From new takes on old classics, to totally original ingredient pairings, you’re bound to find something to pique your interest
Who Isn’t Sunbasket Good For?
People on a budget – With the average meal coming in at $11.99 per portion, the costs can quickly add up. You’re definitely paying for top quality here, but those on a budget might be put off
Large families – Maximum meal kit orders are limited to up to four meals for four people per week. You could of course buy additional ingredients and groceries if you had a larger family, but costs can quickly add up
People with allergies – Unfortunately, Sunbasket doesn’t cater to those that suffer from allergies. You could check individual recipes for traces of nuts or other allergens, but the service can’t guarantee they’ll be 100% removed. If you have severe allergies you might want to try another platform
How Sunbasket Works?

In addition, you can supplement orders with extra pasta packs, sauces, additional meats and a host of desserts. Diet Friendliness
Sunbasket is certainly a great option for anyone looking to eat a little healthier. The lean meats and organic veggies can certainly give you a much-needed nutrition boost. However, the meal kits aren’t specifically designed to assist in weight-loss, but if you watch your calorie intake you could certainly find success.
The platform caters to a good range of other specialist diets though, like gluten-free, vegetarian, diabetes-friendly and paleo.
My Experience Using Sunbasket
As a foodie who is constantly on the go, I am a huge advocate for meal delivery services. The ability to cook fresh and flavorful meals without having to go to the grocery store or spend hours figuring out what to make is a blessing.
I have tried tons of meal delivery services over the years, so I have a pretty good idea of what’s what. Today, I will be reviewing Sunbasket, a meal delivery service that seeks to bring fresh and delicious ingredients home. Spoiler alert: It was awesome.
Ordering Process
The ordering process at Sunbasket was a breeze. Customers have two options to choose from: Fresh & Ready Meals or Meal Kits.
The Fresh & Ready Meals are prepared meals that take just a few minutes to heat up, designed for busy people and/or people who don’t love to cook.
The Meal Kits feature seasonal produce and healthy ingredients, along with a recipe card to walk you through a recipe that takes 15-40 minutes to make.
One thing I really liked about Sunbasket was that you can choose dietary preferences like Diabetes-Friendly, Carb-Conscious, Gluten-Free, Paleo, and Mediterranean. This allows you to customize your experience based on your diet goals.
Delivery and Packaging
With Sunbasket, you are able to choose your delivery day. You can also skip weeks if you want, which is always nice in case you go out of town or want to take a break. My box arrived on time and in the cutest box, I might add. Sunbasket states that most of their packaging is either recyclable or compostable, so they get bonus points for that.
Everything in my Sunbasket box was organized extremely well. Each meal had its own bag filled with ingredients, making it super easy for me to keep it all straight. They put the meats at the bottom of the box under an ice pack to ensure that it stayed fresh, which was nice since UPS took forever to deliver it to me.
Food Quality, Flavor, and Freshness
The company’s mission statement is to empower people to live their healthiest lives, so Sunbasket takes what they do seriously. You can expect to find fresh, seasonal ingredients that taste great and leave you feeling satisfied.
When I opened up my box and checked out the ingredients, it was obvious that everything was fresh and high quality. After cooking and eating the meals, there was no doubt in my mind that Sunbasket uses fresh, quality ingredients.
It definitely made a huge difference in the flavors, so I appreciated their dedication to providing customers with the best ingredients.
Support Materials
Not only does Sunbasket provide recipe cards for each meal, but their website is also filled with tons of other recipes to check out. This is really nice if you’re someone who struggles with figuring out what to cook. Even if your subscription is paused for the week or month, you still have access to the recipe collection.
Cooking with Sunbasket
I thoroughly enjoyed my Sunbasket cooking experience. While the recipe cards were easy to understand, I felt that these meals were on a more intermediate level than beginner. They also took longer to cook than other meal delivery services I have tried, witht the average prep and cook time being around 40 minutes.
That being said, the meals were absolutely delicious. They were loaded with flavor and made with wholesome ingredients, so I loved eating them and felt great afterwards.
Meal 1: Moroccan-Spiced Chicken Skewers with Chickpea Salad
The spice mix that came for the chicken skewers was out of this world tasty. The chickpea and tomato salad was cooked and served warm, which I wasn’t expecting, but it was all fantastic.
Meal 2: Tomato-Braised Pollock over Zucchini and Potatoes
To be totally honest, this meal came out looking pretty hideous. If you’re an aesthetic person looking for photogenic meals, you would have been disappointed. However, if you’re seeking phenomenal flavor and healthy ingredients—it’s a really great dish.
Meal 3: Eggplant and Potato Moussaka
I love Greek food, which is why I chose this dish. It was SO flavorful and satisfying! My boyfriend is Greek and he gave this dish the stamp of approval, so I think it’s safe to say this vegan moussaka recipe is a winner.
After trying it out for myself, here are my final thoughts on the pros and cons of Sunbasket.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I absolutely loved Sunbasket. The meals were delicious, the ingredients were fresh, and the recipes were easy to understand. If you’re someone who knows your way around the kitchen and is looking for healthy recipe inspiration, Sunbasket is for you.
Add-ons
Add-ons are where Sunbasket really shines. While other meal kit providers might offer the odd smoothie or dessert, here you’ll find dozens of high-quality grocery items to choose from to supplement your order.
