Are Meal Delivery Services Worth It? My Splendid Spoon Review
Splendid Spoon is a plant-based, gluten-free, and vegan meal kit delivery service that’s been providing nutritious dishes straight to your door since 2013. It’s a little more expensive than similar platforms, but there’s no denying the health benefits on offer.
Splendid Spoon started out as a smoothie specialist and has now branched out into providing breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks too. The service provides clean ingredients, meaning everything is prepared fresh and is completely free of GMOs. All of the smoothies are 100% organic, and the company works hard to source as many of its other ingredients from organic growers as possible. The meals are designed around providing a gentle introduction to those that might have never tried vegan before, and there are some tasty treats on the menu.
What is Splendid Spoon?

Who is Splendid Spoon Good For?
People on the go – Since each meal has been precooked, all you need to do is heat it through. If you opt for the full three servings per day you’ll be saving bags of time you can spend doing something else
Vegans – Vegans can often be hard done by in the meal delivery industry so it’s good to see some interesting options here
Health-conscious people – Even if you’re not a vegan, but want to get some extra veg in your life, this is a great service to use. You’ve got the option to start small with a simple weekly smoothie pack and you can work your way up to full meals in your own time. There’s no denying that fresh fruit and veg can make you feel great
People on the Weight Watchers diet – Splendid Spoon has tied its meals into the Weight Watchers points system, meaning you can use the platform to follow a delicious meal plan and lose weight at the same time
Who Isn’t Splendid Spoon Good For?
Variety – Splendid Spoon has fairly straightforward meals to offer which largely consist of soup and grain bowls alongside a few other staples. It does rotate the menu each week, but a lot of the dishes can start to feel a little samey, especially after you’ve used the service for a while. The platform does usually add an extra two-to-five brand new meals to the menu each season, but it just doesn’t have the variety of other delivery services
Meat eaters – As a vegan-only service, the carnivorous amongst us might be a little put off by the menu. Other meal services attempt to cater to multiple tastes, but Splendid Spoon is definitely a niche platform
How Splendid Spoon Works?
Once you’ve chosen which meals of the week you’d like covered, you can browse the menu to decide what you’d like. There are about 55 items to choose from in total, covering smoothies, breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, and some of these items will rotate each week. Splendid Spoon pre-cooks all of your meals before flash freezing them to trap in the goodness and nutrition. All you have to do is heat them through.
Cook and Deliver
Splendid Spoon Website and App
The website is bright, fresh, colorful, and inviting. Before you start to browse the menu, you can check out the company ethos and find out the benefits of switching to a plant-based diet. The menu itself is easy to navigate and price plans are clearly marked against the different options.
There’s no app available right now, but this may be something we see from Splendid Spoon in the near future.
Creating an account / Sign-up
Once you click on the ‘get started’ button you’ll be taken to a simple three-step process to sign up. Choose your plan, enter your personal details, and head to the checkout. That’s it. You’re done. This leaves you more time to browse the menu to choose the meals that take your fancy.
Splendid Spoon Meal Plans and Meal Selection Options
There are five plans to choose from, each based on which meals of the week you want to be covered. Some might just want breakfast and others, only smoothies, while some might want to cover everything.
Two plans include a ‘reset’ day. On these days Splendid Spoon recommends you eat five mini soups through the course of the day as a proven way to prevent spikes in blood sugar, increase nutrient absorption and stay on track with healthy habits.
Breakfast Plan – $65 – Receive five protein-packed smoothies each week to kick-start your day the healthy way
Lunch Plan – $65 – Receive five soup and grain bowls each week. These light, nutritious bowls should stave off afternoon tiredness
Breakfast, Lunch Plan – $95 – Get five smoothies and five veggie bowls each week. Choose from more than 50 + dishes
Breakfast, Lunch + Reset Plan – $135 – Get five smoothies, five veggie bowls and five mini soups for your reset day each week
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner + Reset Plan – $185 – Get five smoothies, five-grain bowls, five noodle meals and five mini soups each week
Splendid Spoon Meal Types
There are more than 50 different menu items to pick from each week, but a lot of your choices will be restricted to variations on soup and grain bowls and noodle bowls, so there isn’t a massive amount of variety. That being said, there are still some delicious picks each week, and these are some of our favorites:
Green matcha with avocado and spirulina
Banana flax with probiotics and almonds
Raspberry cacao with coconut and rose water
Soup and grain bowls
Moroccan lentil with tomatoes and turmeric
Cumin sweet potatoes with cashews and cilantro
Cauliflower tikka with coriander and cashews
Red curry noodles with sweet potato and Thai basil
Vegan meatballs and marinara noodles
Kale pesto noodles with roasted tomato and plant-based parmesan
Reset mini soups
Parsnip apple puree
Pumpkin pear bisque
Garden minestrone with zucchini and basil

Since Splendid Spoon is tied into the Weight Watchers points system, it’s a great accompaniment to anyone following that diet. Of course, vegans are well catered for here since every meal is plant-based, and it’s a good choice for anyone looking for extra veg. However, other specialist diets aren’t covered, and meat eaters will be disappointed to hear there are no animal products to be found.
My Experience Using Splendid Spoon
If you are someone who likes quick and easy meals that are full of healthy ingredients, then a meal delivery service might be right up your alley. Not only is it the easiest way to prepare a home-cooked meal, but Splendid Spoon has tons of options to choose from.
Whether you are a meal delivery connoisseur or just getting started, Splendid Spoon is truly one-of-a-kind. Specializing in plant-based smoothies, soups, grain bowls, and noodles, Splendid Spoon does the meal prepping for you, leaving you with healthy and cozy meals that are meant to remind you of home.
Ordering from Splendid Spoon was a breeze, although their many options made for some tough decisions. You start by selecting your desired plan, which consists of different combinations of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a reset (aka soup) plan.
Typically, enrolling in a plan will enroll you in their subscription service, although you can cancel at any time. Because I was just testing out the service, I opted for the “On-Demand Box.” The On-Demand option that I chose was “The Reset + Box,” which included 6 pre-selected soups and a smoothie.
The website says that all orders placed Monday through Wednesday ship the next day, and all orders placed Thursday-Sunday ship on the following Monday. I ordered on Wednesday and as promised, my box shipped the following day. It arrived two days after it shipped, just as the website said it would.
The box was equipped with a make-shift cooler, with carefully sealed and packaged meals inside. Considering I was receiving a big box of soup, I was almost expecting there to be some spillage. However, there were no spills to be seen. All the soups stayed within their containers, so I was able to recycle the box mess-free.
Every soup came individually packaged in a microwave-safe container (which is a huge convenience). That way, I was able to transport the soup from the box to the freezer to the microwave—all in the same container! This was a huge bonus in my eyes.
Splendid Soup prides itself on their protein-packed smoothies, vitamin-rich soups, and bowls that are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, plant-based, non-GMO, and low in sodium. (A mouthful, both figuratively and literally.)
I personally loved knowing that my frozen soups were chock-full of nutritious ingredients that I could trust. Not only did they agree with my nutrient-based diet, but a plant-based diet correlates directly with tons of health benefits that are guaranteed to make anyone feel good.
Don’t ask me why, but I was skeptical about frozen soup. I’ve always thought that there was just something about cooking fresh soup at home that makes it so delicious. Therefore, I was definitely a little suspicious of soups arriving frozen at my door.
However, after thawing and reheating the soups, I was very pleasantly surprised! Not only did the soup still have that warm, fresh-out-of-the-pot feeling, but it was filled with the delicious flavor that only comes from fresh veggies.
I personally loved that my Splendid Spoon box came equipped with an info card that reminded me of what I was getting and why it was great for me. Additionally, every soup container came with detailed reheating instructions on its package, which I thought was wonderful because you couldn’t lose it that way.
Similar to many other meal delivery services, the soups had reheating instructions for both a microwave and a stove, so I tried both methods. In both instances, I had to cook the soups for longer than called for, but no soup took longer than 10 minutes to reheat.
Splendid Spoon Cooking Process
As one might expect from a frozen food service, the cooking process was easy and incredibly user-friendly. All you had to do was remove the container’s lid and seal, then cover and pop into a microwave.
As I mentioned, I also tried reheating some of the soups via stovetop, however I found this to be far more time-consuming. Cooked in a microwave, most soups were ready in about 6 or so minutes (reheating from frozen), but on the stovetop it took me about 10-12 minutes.
Overall, I found some of the soups to be tastier than others, however I am sure most of it was personal preference. Here are my opinions on each meal I tried:
Meal 1: Cauliflower Potato Chowder
This chowder had a very comforting feel to it and reminded me a lot of the soup my grandma used to make. I served it over a bowl of brown rice and the flavors blended really well. However, there was a strong coconut flavor that I think overpowered some of the other flavors. This wasn’t a deal-breaker for me, but I feel like it’s important to note.
Meal 2: Butternut Squash Ratatouille
This ratatouille is veggie-packed, which inevitably made me question how it would taste after being frozen. However, the vegetables tasted fresh and crisp, and the butternut squash was perfectly sweet. My only request would have been for a bit more protein in the meal.
Meal 3: Butternut Turmeric Soup
This soup was delicious and fragrant. It tasted fresh, which I loved, and was filled with all of my favorite fall flavors. Made with butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and nutmeg, this soup makes for an excellent Thanksgiving side dish. Again, my only wish was for a bit more protein.
Meal 4: Mango Guava Smoothie
I admit I am a sucker for a good smoothie, and this one did not disappoint. It was full of fresh, fruity flavors without being overly sweet. I thought it was the perfect refresher after a long day out in the sun. Something to note: it did come frozen and there weren’t any thawing instructions on the packaging. However, I tossed it in the fridge and a few hours later, it was good to go.
Meal 5: Fennel Consommé
I loved this dish because of how good it is for our bodies. It had a sort of lemon-dill flavor that was really delicious. My only issue here was that I wished I had more of it, because this soup was fantastic. Aesthetically, it left something to be desired, but flavor-wise it was on point.
Meal 6: Garden Minestrone
This soup is packed with flavor and vegetables, and it kept me feeling full and energized throughout the day. Made with crisp zucchini and basil, this was one of the better garden soups that I’ve had.
Meal 7: Wellness Shot
Although it definitely was not a meal, I loved this wellness shot. I don’t know if it was merely the idea of it (enter: placebo effect), but taking it gave me a renewed burst of energy. Note: similar to the smoothie, it came frozen, and I had to thaw in the refrigerator for a few hours before consuming it.
Overall, I loved my experience with Splendid Spoon. It is designed with the idea that being busy doesn’t have to mean you can’t eat healthy, which perfectly suits my needs and lifestyle. Although I only had a small taste of what Splendid Spoon has to offer, I was incredibly pleased with my soup reset.
Not only were the meals quick and easy to prepare, but I felt good after eating them, which isn’t something all that common to many frozen meals. So, if you’re on the hunt for easy and nutritious plant-based dishes, I would recommend giving Splendid Spoon a shot.
There are a few nice bits and pieces you can add to your order, but the selection isn’t extensive. They largely consist of immune-boosting ‘wellness shots’ which are drinks packed with antioxidant-rich vitamins and minerals.
